Headlines about the Tigres striker appeared in France following his last appearance in Leagues Cup 2023, where he scored an acrobatic overhead kick against Vancouver Whitecaps. At 37-years-old he still consistently produces decisive moments at the highest level. Of course, this was not news to Tigres fans, yet his performances during Leagues Cup 2023 have been key and once again put the spotlight on the legendary former Marseille man.

The leading goal scorer in the history of Tigres is adding more accolades to his Mexican legacy after securing league victories in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019, along with lifting the Concacaf Champions League trophy in 2020. This journey is far from over after the former French international (36 caps, 7 goals) extended his contract until June 2025, reaffirming his love for Monterrey and Mexico, where he acquired citizenship in 2019.

"It has turned into a passion. They told me, 'You'll see, Monterrey is incredible.' And I had a feeling, and I regret nothing. I still have two years left on my contract, and I need to win another title," Gignac expressed his devotion.

Regardless of doubts about his age and endurance to cope with extended seasons, the Frenchman was steadfast in his resolve to keep playing. “We can say what we want, but I am in great physical shape. I might have some setbacks, but I won't stop fighting. You have to count on me,"he declared.

Gignac's adaptability to his new environment, especially in high-altitude matches, has set him apart, quickly making him the star of the league: he hasn’t looked back since.

"For me, he is the most decisive and influential player to arrive in the Mexican league in the last 15 years," remarked TV Azteca's commentator, Antonio Rosique. "Moreover, he has brought a new dynamic to Tigres. One could even say that he has transformed them into a great team," he added, considering that Tigres' five out of eight national titles were won with the presence of "Dédé Gignac."

His coach, Miguel Herrera, also praised his professionalism, saying, "He arrives early to training, always takes care of his physical condition, and doesn't go out much. That's why, at 37, he is among the players who run the most for the team."

Currently sitting on 192 goals for his club, Gignac is now chasing down the milestone of 200 goals for Tigres, as he also closes down on his 350th appearance.

The Clásico Regio against C.F. Monterray will be the toughest test yet for Tigres in Leagues Cup 2023. If Los Auriazules are to win against their city rivals, Gignac will have to play a big role.
