Defending the pride of LIGA MX: CF Monterrey vs Nashville SC

monterrey_nashville

CF Monterrey are the lone LIGA MX team standing in Leagues Cup 2023 and in the words of their coach, “Tano” Ortiz, they will aim to fight in the name of Mexican soccer. In addition to the support from their supports, the club has the support of their fellow LIGA MX members and Mexican soccer fans who don’t want to see the Leagues Cup title in the hands of a Major League Soccer club.

This may be the biggest night in the history of the four-year existence of Nashville as an MLS side. The side from Tennessee cruised to a 5-0 win over Minnesota United in the quarter finals, with Shaq Moore, Teal Bunbury, Alex Muyl, Sam Surridge and Hany Mukthar all getting themselves on the scoresheet. Nashville SC has scored four or more goals eight times in club history across all competitions, with an all-time record of 8W-0L-0D in that span. Their drubbing of Minnesota marks Nashville’s fourth time scoring five goals in a single match. This also marked Nashville’s highest margin of victory. The club from the "Music City" are one game away from potentially playing for their first-ever trophy.

Meanwhile, Monterrey were considered as one of the favourites for the tournament before Leagues Cup 2023 kicked-off. They have certainly lived up to that expectation, beating four MLS sides and coming out as victors in a Clásico Regio against Tigres in the round of 32. This is equally impressive considering they have been playing on the road throughout the whole competition. They are, however, the last remaining Mexican side in the tournament, having beaten LAFC in the previous round. They came from two goals down to secure a comeback 3-2 win over the Californians at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium.
