The San Jose Earthquakes were founded in 1974 as a charter member of the NASL, they won the championship in 1974 and 1981. But then the Earthquakes folded in 1984 due to financial problems. They were re-launched in 1994 as an MLS expansion team and have gone on to win the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003.
The Quakes have had some notable players in their team over the years, such as Landon Donovan and Hugo Sanchez. They are currently fifth place in the Western Conference in MLS, having won eight games, drawn eight, and lost seven after 23 rounds.
San Jose will form part of the group, West 1, along with Portland Timbers and Tigres UANL. Their first match will be on July 22 against Portland at Providence Park at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Cristian Espinoza: Finally becoming the star player
He began his career with Club Atletico Lanus, where he made his professional debut in 2014. The Argentine attacker then moved to Villarreal CF in 2016, where he played for the reserve team and in 2019 finally made the move to San Jose Earthquakes.
Espinoza has made over 100 appearances for the club but never had the consistency of a star. This season though, he has stepped it up; he currently has scored 10 goals and has 4 assists in 22 matches. His ability to play in any position across the attacking line will make him a dangerous player for any team facing San Jose.
Cade Cowell: The present and future of the Quakes
He began his career with the San Jose Earthquakes Academy, and then made his professional debut for the club in 2019. He is the youngest player to ever play for the Earthquakes, and since then has gone on to become a regular starter.
At 19 years old, Cowell already has over 100 appearances for the Quakes. He is a rising star in Major League Soccer and is expected to play a big role in the future of San Jose.
