After taking on Cruz Azul on the opening night of this year’s Leagues Cup, Inter Miami CF will turn their attention to a more familiar rival in Atlanta United FC, who they host on July 25 at DRV PNK Stadium.
The Herons will once again be in action in Fort Lauderdale for their second match-up of their Leagues Cup campaign as part of South 3. The hosts will be hoping the arrivals of World Cup winners Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets can add a spark and shake the team out of a barren spell of form, one that’s seen them glued to the bottom of MLS’s Eastern Conference. Across 21 games this season, the Florida outfit have only come out on top five times, but impressed on Friday as Lionel Messi's late free kick sealed a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul.
Atlanta United’s fortunes appear markedly better, given they sit up in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, and are ideally placed to challenge for a play-off berth. They’ll be looking to get their own back after Inter Miami CF were the victors when the two sides met back in May - thanks to a double from none other than former Atlanta United FC striker Josef Martínez. This will mark the visitors' first match of Leagues Cup 2023.
Which teams make up South 3?
As well as Inter Miami CF and Atlanta United FC, the South 3 pool will also include Cruz Azul, who won the inaugural Leagues Cup back in 2019. The Mexico City-based outfit will have a point to prove this summer, having faltered at the first playoff stage of the Torneo Clausura 2023 in Liga MX this spring, with a 1-0 loss to Atlas FC. They started the tournament with a 2-1 loss in Miami.
