MATCHDAY 5: Pressure intensifies as group stage progresses

prev

CHARLOTTE vs. CRUZ AZUL (Bank of America Stadium)

Charlotte FC and Cruz Azul cross paths again in the Leagues Cup when the two face off on Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The two clubs met in the Round of 32 of the 2023 edition in a scoreless draw that needed a penalty shootout to decide the winner. It was Charlotte who advanced, 4-3, spot kicks, moving all the way to the quarterfinals.

The repercussions of that defeat led to the LIGA MX club parting ways with then-head coach Ricardo Ferretti. One year later, the players of La Maquina still remember the sting of being eliminated earlier than expected.

SANTOS LAGUNA vs. D.C. UNITED (Subaru Park)

These are the matchups Leagues Cup is all about.

Ordinarily, Club Santos Laguna would be unlikely to meet D.C. United in any traditional competition prior to the introduction of Leagues Cup, yet the two teams provide a fascinating matchup fans will be eager to witness.

Following their opening penalty shootout victory, the Black-and-Red are looking to ride the momentum to an improvement on last season’s Round of 32 finish by winning group East 7 and hopefully their first Leagues Cup knockout match.

DALLAS vs. JUÁREZ (Toyota Stadium)

The pressure is mounting on FC Dallas as they are — like many other teams — in a must-win scenario. On Wednesday, they host FC Juarez, a team from LIGA MX looking to reach the knockout stage of the Leagues Cup for a second straight year in a West 3 encounter at Toyota Stadium at 9 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass.

Dallas is coming off a 2-1 loss in St. Louis on Saturday and it is safe to say that their future in the tournament is on the line. A win would put them in a good position heading into the final leg of the group stage even on their bye, but a 90-minute tie and penalty shootout extra point would force their destiny into someone else’s control. A loss would mean elimination.

NASHVILLE vs. MAZATLÁN (GEODIS Park)

Last year’s runners up will make their 2024 Leagues Cup debut as Nashville SC hosts Mazatlán FC at Geodis Park in a group East 5 matchup.

In 2023 a sudden death loss in penalty kicks to Inter Miami kept Nashville from hoisting the cup. Mazatlán, on the other hand, were an unexpected bright spot for LIGA MX, with a surprise run into the knockouts.

TIGRES vs. PUEBLA (Shell Energy Stadium)

Following a loss to Inter Miami CF at Chase Stadium last Saturday night, Club Puebla sets their sights on the Tigres UNAL in their final match of the 2024 Leagues Cup East 3 group stage on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET at Shell Energy Stadium.

Los Camoteros will need Kevin Velasco to step up and put his chances away in this do-or-die game for Puebla. On the other side of the pitch, Tigres look to start their Leagues Cup campaign and will play against Miami after Puebla.

Tigres secured a comfortable victory in their last LIGA MX match, beating Santos Laguna, 3-0. Tigres superstar André-Pierre Gignac found the back of the net in this match and is poised to be a favorite for Leagues Cup’s Best Player award.

LA GALAXY vs. SAN JOSE (PayPal Park)

Welcome to Cali Clasico: Leagues Cup edition!

Two MLS originals meet in a classic American derby on Wednesday night: five-time MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy travel north to face bitter rivals San Jose Earthquakes in a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff at PayPal Park.

Currently sitting atop the MLS Western Conference table, the Galaxy will be confident against bottom-of-the-table San Jose. However, coming off their most valuable win of the season (a penalty shootout against Guadalajara in their Leagues Cup opener), so will the Earthquakes.
