Matchday 7 of Leagues Cup 2023: Who’s playing?

MATCHDAY

Matchday 7 of Leagues Cup 2023 will be the first of the last three days of group stage action. On 29 July we will have 5 matches that will determine the fate of their groups. Who are the players and teams involved? Find out everything you need to know right here.

CRUZ AZUL VS. ATLANTA UNITED FC

  • DATE: 29 July
  • STADIUM: Mercedes Benz Stadium
  • GROUP: South 3
  • TIME: 19:00 hrs. ET / 17:00 hrs. CDMX

This game determines who will finish second in the South 2 group. Inter Miami CF beat both of these teams and have already secured their place in the next round.

Who will advance? Whoever wins the game, either in regular time or on penalties, will be the side who will be in the next phase of the tournament.

ORLANDO CITY VS. CLUB SANTOS LAGUNA

  • DATE: July 29
  • STADIUM: Exploria Stadium
  • GROUP: South 2
  • TIME: 19:30 hrs. ET / 17:30 hrs. CDMX

If Orlando City win this match, either in the 90 minutes or on penalty kicks, they would advance to the next round as group winners and Houston Dynamo would finish second (also advancing to the next round).

Club Santos Laguna are in a similar situation. They need to win the match to advance to the next round. A draw is not enough for the LIGA MX side. They must go for the win either in the 90 minutes or on penalties to advance. Right now all three teams in the group have a goal difference of zero. That means that if Santos can beat Orlando by one goal, they would be in first place in their group, despite being in third place at the moment.

CLUB NECAXA VS. CHARLOTTE FC

  • DATE: July 29
  • STADIUM: Bank of America Stadium
  • GROUP: South 4
  • TIME: 19:30 hrs. ET / 17:30 hrs. CDMX

Charlotte FC’s destiny is in their own hands to finish first in the group. They need to beat Necaxa in the 90 minutes to take five points and thus overtake FC Dallas, which would join them in the next round. It is also enough to win the match on penalties, but then they would be tied on points with FC Dallas and depend on goal difference to know who advances in first and second place.

Club Necaxa has a more complicated task as they have no points and their goal difference is -3. Even so, they are not yet eliminated, if they win the match in the first 90 minutes they can advance second in the group. It is the only alternative they have.

AUSTIN FC VS. FC JUAREZ

  • DATE: 29 July
  • STADIUM: Q2 Stadium
  • GROUP: South 1
  • TIME: 20:30 hrs. ET / 18:30 hrs. CDMX

Things are simpler in this group. Whoever wins this match, either in regular time or on penalty kicks, will advance to the next round as group runner-up.

PUMAS VS. D.C. UNITED

  • DATE: 29 July
  • STADIUM: Audi Field
  • GROUP: East 2
  • TIME: 21:00 hrs. ET / 19:00 hrs. CDMX

The last match of the day will pit two teams in different situations against each other. On the one hand, D.C. United are already qualified. If they draw or win this match, they secure first place in their group.

On the other side Pumas must go out and win the match, if they win it in regular time, they will advance as group winners and D.C. United would advance as runners-up. If Pumas wins on penalties, they would advance as runners-up. Now, there is a third option for Pumas, which is to draw and lose on penalties. That would also be enough to advance.
