Fourteen matches took place on a busy Saturday evening across Major League Soccer, with plenty of action, including a late equalizer in Utah and a big home win for Philadelphia Union. Read on for our recap of all of yesterday’s action:
D.C. United 3-0 FC Cincinnati
The visitors remain in top spot in the Eastern Conference, but their winning run has come to an end as they finished with ten men after Ian Murphy was sent off. The hosts had goals from Pedro Santos, Derrick Williams and Cristian Dajomé to move back into ninth place.
Philadelphia Union 4-1 Inter Miami CF
In Philadelphia, the hosts also spread the goals around to notch a comprehensive win over struggling Miami. With the win, the Union move to within two points of second place, having won four of their last six matches.
Columbus Crew 2-0 Nashville SC
Christian Ramírez scored his seventh goal of the season on twenty minutes, and that was all the hosts needed to keep up what is now a five-match unbeaten run. Nashville remain third, but have now lost two matches in a row for the first time since March.
Charlotte FC 0-0 CF Montréal
Another brilliant performance in goal from Jonathan Sirois (four saves) saw Montréal notch a clean sheet on the road, the result keeping them ahead of their opponents on the night. Charlotte dominated the game, having more possession and shots but couldn’t find a way past the visitors.
New York Red Bulls 4-0 Atlanta United
Frankie Amaya scored a brace off the bench to help lead the hosts to a comprehensive win over Atlanta. With the win, the hosts moved to within three points of the playoffs, while wobbling Atlanta now have the league’s worst defense.
New England Revolution 2-1 Toronto FC
Veteran Bobby Wood continues to roll back the years as the striker scored and set up Giacomo Vrioni to keep New England’s strong form going. Toronto had struck first through DeAndre Kerr, but the hosts gamely battled back, and Vrioni sealed the result just seven minutes into the second half.
Sporting Kansas City 0-1 Chicago Fire FC
Fabian Herbers scored the game’s only goal early in the second half and Chris Brady made four saves for the visitors as they put an end to SKC’s strong run of form.
Austin FC 3-0 Houston Dynamo FC
Austin won their second straight match against a Copa Tejas opponent, beating previously in-form Houston in style. Veteran Gyasi Zardes scored for the fifth time in seven matches, as Austin moved to within a point of the top seven.
Real Salt Lake 2-2 Minnesota United FC
In arguably the most entertaining match of the weekend, Justen Glad snatched a point for the hosts in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Minnesota had scored twice in the first half, but after Danny Musovski had pulled a goal back with just ten minutes to go, RSL kept battling to find an equalizer.
Colorado Rapids 0-0 LA Galaxy
William Yarbrough kept three saves to keep the visitors at bay, but Colorado were unable to capitalize on having more of the ball in a scoreless draw that does neither side much good.
Los Angeles Football Club 2-3 Vancouver Whitecaps FC
In the shock result of the weekend, Vancouver headed south and got a vital win against LAFC. Dénis Bouanga had scored after the Whitecaps had taken a 2-0 lead, but Ryan Gauld, who also had two assists, struck a winner with half an hour to go. Carlos Vela would add another for LAFC, but the hosts would come no closer.
San Jose Earthquakes 1-2 St. Louis CITY SC
Rarely-used Samuel Adeniran was given the start for the visitors and responded with a brace to allow St. Louis to go level with LAFC atop the Western Conference. Jamiro Monteiro would pull a goal back for the ‘Quakes, but the hosts were unable to notch a vital point.
Portland Timbers 1-1 New York City FC
Evander scored and hit the woodwork, but Portland were pegged back by an incredible goal by Keaton Parks early in the second half, and the match ended level despite some fine attempts from both sides.
Seattle Sounders FC 0-0 Orlando City
Stefan Frei kept his tenth clean sheet of the season, but his side couldn’t get past Pedro Gallese in the Orlando goal as both ‘keepers impressed.
