As thousands of ecstatic fans dressed in black and red filled Mercedes Benz Stadium, the Golden Spike was struck onto a railway platform amidst cheers of "A-T-L."
The ceremony took on added significance as hip-hop artist Yung Joc, a native of Atlanta, emerged from the shadows, wielding a hammer and ready to strike the Golden Spike for the first time in history.
Following the final whistle, the honour of striking the golden nail with a legitimate and authentic golden hammer from Atlanta's railroad yards was bestowed upon a player voted by fans on Twitter for their exceptional performance in the match. The first-ever goal scorer for Atlanta United, the Argentine Yamil Asad, received the most votes and joyfully drove the Golden Spike into the platform in front of 55,297 fans. This tradition would continue after the inauguration of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Venezuelan Josef Martínez being the chosen player to drive the first Golden Spike in the new home of Atlanta United.
