In the heart of Atlanta, a new chapter in sports history was written on March 5, 2017, as Atlanta United made its debut in Major League Soccer against the New York Red Bulls at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Georgia. This momentous occasion not only marked the birth of a new soccer club but also introduced a unique and meaningful tradition - the "Golden Spike."

Drawing inspiration from Atlanta's rich railway heritage, dating back to the 1830s when the city's first railroad was constructed, Atlanta United set out to honor its historical roots. The Golden Spike, historically known as a ceremonial final spike driven into a railway track, became the symbol chosen by the club. In a video released by the team, the Golden Spike was described as the "anchoring of a movement, a new home uniting culture and generations."

Ninety minutes before kick-off, players and fans gathered at the American Family Insurance Fan Village adjacent to the stadium to sign the grand golden nail. Around 45 minutes before the match began, the Atlanta United supporters proudly marched to the stadium, carrying the Golden Spike - signed by all - symbolizing unity and strength. As thousands of ecstatic fans dressed in black and red filled Mercedes Benz Stadium, the Golden Spike was struck onto a railway platform amidst cheers of "A-T-L."

The ceremony took on added significance as hip-hop artist Yung Joc, a native of Atlanta, emerged from the shadows, wielding a hammer and ready to strike the Golden Spike for the first time in history.

Following the final whistle, the honour of striking the golden nail with a legitimate and authentic golden hammer from Atlanta's railroad yards was bestowed upon a player voted by fans on Twitter for their exceptional performance in the match. The first-ever goal scorer for Atlanta United, the Argentine Yamil Asad, received the most votes and joyfully drove the Golden Spike into the platform in front of 55,297 fans. This tradition would continue after the inauguration of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Venezuelan Josef Martínez being the chosen player to drive the first Golden Spike in the new home of Atlanta United.

Golden Spike

The Golden Spike tradition represents more than just a ceremonial act; it symbolizes the birth of a movement, the connection with the world, and the union of diverse cultures, generations, and backgrounds. For everyone who has experienced it, the Golden Spike serves as a reminder of the city's origins and its rise as a vibrant city and club.
