Xherdan Shaqiri: “Club América is the biggest in Mexico”

"Club América is the biggest in Mexico." 

That’s what Chicago Fire star player Xherdan Shaqiri told TUDN.com following his club’s loss to Club América in the Leagues Cup 2023 round of 32.

That match affirmed the 31-year old Swiss’ comments. But is Las Águilas the favorite among the LIGA MX teams to win Leagues Cup 2023?

The round of 16 began with Inter Miami CF taking on FC Dallas. Led by a brilliant performance from Lionel Messi, and a dramatic late-match free kick equalizer, Inter Miami advanced after a 5-3 penalty shootout win.

Among the 16 teams that were left in the tournament, five were from LIGA MX and 11 were from Major League Soccer. The first LIGA MX team to play in the round was Club Querétaro, who advanced over the New England Revolution following a 4-3 penalty kick shootout win.

Toluca FC will tae on Minnesota United FC and try to become the next LIGA MX club in the quarterfinals. The Clásicao Regio featuring Tigres and CF Monterrey will also take place on Tuesday night with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.

The fifth LIGA MX representative of the round,Club América, will take on Nashville SC. The match will kickoff at 8:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. CDMX) at GEODIS Park in Tennessee. The MLS side comes into the match after eliminating FC Cincinnati on penalties (5-4), after a 1-1 draw.

Las Águilas have two wins and a loss in the tournament. They began Leagues Cup 2023 with a resounding 4-0 win over St. Louis CITY. But I their second match, they lost badly, 4-1, to the Columbus Crew.

But Club América redeemed itself in the round of 32 with a tough 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire

Is Shaqiri right and are Las Águilas Mexico's favorites to win Leagues Cup 2023?
