Argentinian striker Germán Berterame is now the top scorer at this year’s Leagues Cup, having put away a hat-trick this Sunday evening in **CF Monterrey’s** 4-2 comeback win over **Seattle Sounder**s FC. The result means that the LIGA MX side have won both of their group stage games and will now advance to the knockout stages.
The 24-year-old Berterame arrived in Mexican football back in July of 2019. His first team was Atlético San Luis, and three years later he joined Rayados, where he now leads the line. Against the Seattle Sounders, with his team 2-0 down, he halved the deficit on the half hour mark. He equalised from the penalty spot just before half-time, before setting up Jordi Cortizo for the third after the break and then scoring the fourth on 63 minutes.
Berterame had shown his eye for goal early on in his first Leagues Cup game, where he only needed 13 minutes to find the net against Real Salt Lake. He would add a second to his account when he scored his team’s third of the game, putting the result beyond reach for a 3-0 win to open his team’s group stage campaign.
A look at the goals Berterame has scored so far:
With five goals to his name, Berterame is now top of the **Leagues Cup 2023** scoring charts. Just behind him are Dániel Gazdag, Brandon Vázquez and Bongokuhle Hlongwane, all sitting on four strikes each.
Berterame has been with Rayados since July of last year, and in the space of a year he has registered 14 goals and 6 assists in 43 appearances
The Argentinian center-forward first broke onto the scene at San Lorenzo de Almagro, where he played during the 2016/17 campaign. In his years at the academy, Berterame made his name as the top scorer in the history of the club’s youth teams.
After being in and out of the first team with the Ciclón for two years, he moved to second-tier side Patronato de Paraná. Then, Atlético San Luis came in with an offer for the prospect, who had also been playing for the national youth teams.
Now, the marksman has become one of the main players at Leagues Cup 2023. Will another player knock Berterame off his perch as the tournament’s top scorer so far?
