Leagues Cup sees first two hat tricks in quick succession

Dániel Gazdag, the Philadelphia Union’s Hungarian forward, scored the first hat-trick at this summer’s Leagues Cup this Wednesday night. After their convincing 5-1 win over Club Querétaro, the MLS side have sealed their spot in the playoffs.

Minutes later, Giacomo Vrioni would do his thing and score three goals in the New England Revolution’s 5-1 win over **Atlético San Luis**.

Gazdag would become the first player to score three goals in a Leagues Cup match this summer. In the space of just over half an hour. He was responsible for opening the scoring after 30 minutes, doubling the lead 9 minutes later. He would score just after the break from the penalty spot to make it 4-0 for his team, and register his third on the night.

Minutes later, in the match between Atlético San Luis and the New England Revolution, Giacomo Vrioni would score the second hat-trick of this year’s Leagues Cup. The Albanian international opened the scoring after fifteen minutes before scoring his team’s fourth five minutes from the half. He then added the final goal of the game on the hour mark to make it 5-1.

Philadelphia’s result meant they secured their place in the Round of 32, with two wins in as many matches. New England will also advance to the next round, despite losing on penalties in their first match-up against the New York Red Bulls. The latter team will play against San Luis in the final round of group stage matches, with the last spot to advance from East 4 on the line.
